DIY Halloween Door Sign
LEARN HOW TO MAKE FUN HALLOWEEN DOOR SIGNS USING WOOD CIRCLES, VINYL, AND YOUR CRICUT
I love seeing everyone's wood door signs! They are all over the Facebook groups I am a member of and, honestly, are something I have always been intimidated by. However, I took the plunge and designed this cute (and clever) Halloween door sign.
After I made this cool sign, I don't know why I was ever intimidated. They are so fun and easy to make!
In this tutorial, I’ll give you my step by step instructions and tell you what materials I think work best when making this project.

Instructions
STEP 1 - DOWNLOAD THE SVG CUT FILE
Download the SVG Cut file for the Witches Sign (#39) from The File Vault. Get access by joining the club.
STEP 2 - UPLOAD THE SVG FILE TO CRICUT DESIGN SPACE
If you aren't familiar with uploading SVG files into Design Space, take a look at my quick and easy tutorial here. If you are on your smartphone, here is my tutorial on using the Cricut App.
STEP 3 - RESIZE YOUR IMAGE IF NEEDED
Once you have your svg uploaded into Design Space, measure your unfinished wood circle and resize your svg file accordingly.
STEP 4 - UNGROUP THE LAYERS
After you have resized your svg, UNGROUP the layers by selecting it from the layers panel.
Hide the yellow circle in the LAYERS panel. This was just for visual representation of your finished project.
To hide a layer, click the EYE in the upper right hand corner of the layer.
STEP 5 - ATTACH LAYERS AS YOU SEE FIT
This is a matter of personal preference. Some people want to attach as many layers as possible to help with alignment when using vinyl. It is totally up to you!
For this tutorial, I am attaching the "We can be real", "Witches", the witch drawing, and a bat together. To do this, I am highlighting said layers.
Then selecting the ATTACH button on the lower right hand corner of the layers panel.
Click the GREEN Make It button.
STEP 6 - PREPARE YOUR MATS AND MAKE MATERIAL SELECTION
Depending on the size of your wood circle and how many layers you attached together, you may see the notification to use the larger 12x24 cutting mat.
Click the CONTINUE button and make your material selections. Be sure to select the appropriate kind of vinyl from the materials list.
STEP 7 - LOADING YOUR MATS AND CUTTING THE IMAGE
Once you have placed your kraft board onto your mat, load the cutting mat into the machine by pressing the flashing ARROW button.
You will know the machine is ready to cut your material when you see the flashing "C" button. Press that to start the cut.
Repeat Step 7 for until all cuts are made.
STEP 8 - WEED YOUR VINYL
Once you have completed your cuts and removed your vinyl from the mats, weed the elements of your sign and set aside.
STEP 9 - PREP YOUR WOOD SIGN
I am using Rustoleam Painters Touch Paint and Primer for my wood sign, in yellow. You can choose any color paint or stain you would like. I recommend two coats depending on the paint medium you select.
After the paint has dried, I added a hole to hang the sign using an electric drill. This is totally optional. You can hang your sign using picture hanging hardware like D-hooks on the back of the sign as well!
Apply at least two coats of clear sealer to your clean wood sign. Allow to dry completely.
STEP 10 - APPLY YOUR VINYL TO YOUR SIGN
Now that your sign is dry and prepped, you can begin to add your vinyl. YAY!
Apply your transfer tape to your vinyl decal. Be careful and take your time to avoid any wrinkles in the transfer tape.
Use your scraper to ensure good adhesion to the vinyl.
Slowly pull the paper backing away from the transfer sheet.
Position your vinyl decal onto your sign.
Take your scraper and burnish the vinyl to ensure it has adhered to the sign.
Carefully remove the transfer tape.
Repeat step 10 for the remaining layers.
Your sign is now complete!
STEP 11 - ADD YOUR HANGING HARDWARE
Add your hanging hardware if you are choosing to use any hooks. For this tutorial, I am using fishing line to hang my sign from a nail that I added to the door frame years ago. Rope would look fun or even some black cording! Totally up to you!
Isn't this sign so fun? Easy too, right? I know this will be a fun project to make for your Halloween door!
By the way, the font that I used for this project came from FontBundles.net. It is called Mitoos Halloween Typeface. If you want to get the font for more customization or even other Halloween projects, you can purchase it here.
If you need help uploading fonts into Cricut Design Space, I have a blog post to walk you through it here.
