Side Easel Wedding Card
LEARN TO MAKE ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS WEDDING CARDS USING A SIDE EASEL TECHNIQUE ON YOUR CRICUT CUTTING MACHINE!
Okay, everyone! I just love this one! It is so stunning!!
This card came about when I was playing around with how my easel cards pop up. I was turning them around this way and that way to see how they looked. Turns out, they look pretty darn cool from the side!
I originally saw this type of design on Pinterest when I was browsing wedding ideas and just knew I had to come up with my own version for our digital cutting machines!
Here was my “test cut”. I used my own wedding colors minus the gray. As you can see, it takes on a whole different look and feel using muted and subtle colors and paper.
This card comes with two versions for the “Congratulations” sentiment. For those of you who prefer everything to be cut out of cardstock, please select the “Cut Version”. Those of you who like to have your cutting machine to draw out sentiments, especially smaller and frilly text, please select the “Pen Version”.
I have even included a gift box for this stunning card to be placed in. I am unsure if I would mail this out but the box can be dressed up to create a beautiful presentation.
In this tutorial, I’ll give you my step by step instructions and tell you what materials I think work best when making this project.

Download the SVG Cut file for the Side Easel Wedding Card (#90) from The File Vault. Get access by joining the club.
Note: There are two options for this design. One is designed to have the "Congratulations" sentiment to be drawn on by your cutting machine and the other is designed to be cut out of cardstock. Please choose which variation you are most comfortable with.
STEP 2 - UPLOAD THE SVG FILE TO CRICUT DESIGN SPACE
If you aren't familiar with uploading SVG files into Design Space, take a look at my quick and easy tutorial here. Using your smartphone? Click here for my step-by-step guide on uploading SVG files with the Cricut App.
STEP 3 - UNGROUP CARD LAYERS
The file will upload into Cricut Design Space grouped together. You will want to hit the UNGROUP button to separate the layers.
STEP 4 - CONVERT FOLD LINES TO SCORE LINES
Scroll down the list in the LAYERS panel and find the outer card layer. Click the fold line.
Change the fold lines to score lines by changing the OPERATION from BASIC CUT to SCORE.
Attach the score line and the card piece by highlighting the GROUP the card layer is under and selecting the ATTACH option in lower right hand corner.
Repeat this step for the box lid and base.
STEP 5 - CONVERT TEXT FROM CUT TO DRAW
Note: This step is is you selected the svg file where the sentiment is to be drawn by your cutting machine.
Scroll down the list in the LAYERS panel and find the sentiment layer. Click the text.
Change the text by changing the OPERATION from BASIC CUT to PEN.
Attach the text and the card piece by highlighting the GROUP the sentiment is under and selecting the ATTACH option in lower right hand corner.
Click the GREEN Make It Button.
STEP 6 - MAKE YOUR MATERIAL SELECTIONS AND PREPARE YOUR MATS
You will see the nine layers for this card in the mat preview.
Click the CONTINUE button.
For this tutorial, I am using a combination of Medium Cardstock and Glitter Cardstock. Select your materials accordingly.
Attach your cardstock to the Cricut StandardGrip Mat using the Cricut Brayer.
STEP 7 - LOADING YOUR MATS AND CUTTING YOUR MATERIALS
To load the mat into the machine, press the double arrows button. Do make sure that the mat is positioned under the mat guides.
You will know the machine is ready to cut your material when you see the flashing "C" button. Press that to start the cut.
Follow Design Space prompts to change out the scoring wheel and fine point cutting blade.
Once the cut is complete, make sure to peel the mat away from the cardstock rather than the cardstock from the mat. This will prevent any curling of your design.
Repeat Step 7 for until all layers have been cut.
STEP 8 - ASSEMBLE YOUR CARD
Now that everything is cut, we can start to assemble the card.
Begin by carefully folding along the score line of the outer card.
Burnish the fold with your scraper.
Open the card up and add glue to the lace area.
If you don't have a precision tip on your glue, you can smear some on your hand and press the card into the glue for an even coat. Just remember to wash off the excess glue from your hand!
Add the cover panel to the glue concealing the lace portion from the inside.
Fold the card making sure everything is adhered well and the card can move as we want it to.
Assemble your mat and layer for the inside of the card.
Add glue to the backside of the mat.
Add to the inside of the card. There should be a very thin white border around the mat.
Apply a foam square to the backside of the circle cutout and set aside.
Note: I have included two sizes of circles for you. I did this so you had options depending on the size of your embellishments.
"Teach" the lace portion to curve by gently rolling it with your fingers.
Remove the paper backing from the foam square and press into place. I have mine about an inch in from the right side of the card.
This is what creates not only the stand for your card but the gorgeous look as well!
Next, add glue to the backside of the sentiment layer.
Press into place on top of the cooresponding mat.
Apply foam squares to the backside of the mat and add to the inside of the card.
Now, take your remaining mat and layer and add glue to the back of the layer.
Attach them together.
Then, to the backside of the card. This gives you plently of room for your journaling or message.
With your card open, add hot glue to the back of the mini roses and adhere on top of the circle cutout.
Add the greenery as to frame the sentiment and the flowers.
Your card is complete.
STEP 9 - ASSEMBLE THE GIFT BOX
Begin by adding the patterned paper to the box lid.
Fold and burnish the score lines.
Add glue to the tabs.
Press the tab into place forming the lid.
Repeat this step for the box base.
Your card is now ready to be placed into the gift box!
This card is an absolute showstopper! You could line the inside of the box with tissue paper and seal the lid with a pretty bow to give it an extra special touch!
I can't wait to see how you make yours!
