New Home Pop-Up Cards
LEARN HOW TO MAKE POP UP CARDS FOR SOMEONE MOVING INTO A NEW HOME, APARTMENT, OR RENTAL SPACE USING YOUR CRICUT CUTTING MACHINE
My friend Jamie just moved into a new home and I wanted to say congratulations in a fun and upbeat way. She is one of my closest friends. She was even my Maid of Honor at our wedding. I just love her and her fiance so much so I came up with this totally awesome pop-up card.
Now, I designed this to be playful and cartoon like. I just smile every time I see it.
Once it is received, it is intended to be kept open on a side table.
There is space on the back to add your message and, of course, folds flat to mail in the included envelope.
In this tutorial, I’ll give you my step by step instructions and tell you what materials I think work best when making this project.

Instructions
STEP 1 - DOWNLOAD THE SVG CUT FILE
Download the SVG Cut file for the New Home Pop Up Card (#88) from The File Vault. Get access by joining the club.
STEP 2 - UPLOAD THE SVG FILE TO CRICUT DESIGN SPACE
If you aren't familiar with uploading SVG files into Design Space, take a look at my quick and easy tutorial here. Using your smartphone? Click here for my step-by-step guide on uploading SVG files with the Cricut App.
STEP 3 - UNGROUP CARD LAYERS
The file will upload into Cricut Design Space grouped together. You will want to hit the UNGROUP button to separate the layers.
STEP 4 - CONVERT FOLD LINES TO SCORE LINES
Scroll down the list in the LAYERS panel and find the envelope. Click the fold line.
Change the fold lines to score lines by changing the OPERATION from BASIC CUT to SCORE.
Attach the score line and the card piece by highlighting the GROUP the envelope is under and selecting the ATTACH option in lower right hand corner.
Repeat Step 4 for the outer card layer and the pop up layer.
Click the GREEN Make It Button.
STEP 5 - MAKE YOUR MATERIAL SELECTIONS AND PREPARE YOUR MATS
You will see the sixteen layers for this card in the mat preview. You may be able to reduce the number of mats by moving objects of like colors to a single mat.
Click the CONTINUE button.
For this tutorial, I am using Medium Cardstock. Select your materials accordingly.
I suggest you change your pressure setting to MORE.
Attach your cardstock to the Cricut StandardGrip Mat using the Cricut Brayer.
STEP 6 - LOADING YOUR MATS AND CUTTING YOUR MATERIALS
To load the mat into the machine, press the double arrows button. Do make sure that the mat is positioned under the mat guides.
You will know the machine is ready to cut your material when you see the flashing "C" button. Press that to start the cut.
Follow Design Space prompts to change out the scoring wheel and fine point cutting blade.
Once the cut is complete, make sure to peel the mat away from the cardstock rather than the cardstock from the mat. This will prevent any curling of your design.
Repeat Step 6 for until all layers have been cut.
STEP 7 - ASSEMBLE YOUR CARD
Now that everything is cut, we can start to assemble the card.
Begin by folding the pop up layer along the score lines. I find it best to start from left to right.
Working on the chimney, begin with a valley fold to start the pop up. Then a mountain fold.
Once the chimney is folded properly, fold the score line of the front door.
To fold the roof line, I find it best to press from the back with one hand and pinch the fold with the other hand.
Continue folding the pop up along the score lines.
To help explain the valley and mountain folds, I created this graphic to define each fold line.
Your pop up layer should look like this when done.
Fold the layer to ensure everything closes properly.
Open the pop up layer flat.
Add one of the light blue cover panels by manuevering the layer around the house and fence line. This will form the sky.
Make sure the cover panel lays flat and that you leave a small white border around the sides.
Add glue and/or adhesive to the back of the cover panel to adhere it to the pop up layer.
Repeat for the other sky cover panel.
Fold the pop up layer to make sure everything closes properly.
Now we can add the overlays and embellishments.
Add glue to the backside of the chimney piece.
Apply to the pop up layer.
You will notice the overlay is slightly smaller than the pop up layer. This is to ensure everything folds nicely. If it were the exact size, your card could warp, bulge, or crack.
Add the remaining piece of the chimney.
Next, add the door overlay.
Now, add glue to the pop up layer where the siding would be and add the overlays accordingly.
Flip the card over and gently pull back on the sky cover panel exposing the window cutouts.
Add glue around the windows and add the cover panels on top of the glue.
To add finish off the roof line, add a thin line of glue to the white strips on the pop up layer.
Add the black rectangles to each line of glue. I find the Cricut Tweezers to be invaluable for this part of the tutorial.
Note: Alternatively, you could color in the strips on the white pop up layer with a sharpie or black maker.
Fold the card to ensure everything sits properly.
Now, add the grass overlay to the bottom of each side of the card. Each piece has a notch cut of to fit under the fence line and house.
Make sure to line up the bottom edge of the grass overlay with the sky cover panel.
Next, add the sun and rays to the left top corner of the sky cover panel.
Followed by the tree trunks and foliage.
FInally, the clouds.
After everything has been glued down, give the card another fold and then prop the card up to dry.
Now we need to work on the mats and layers for the front and back of the card.
Add adhesive to the backside of the front layer.
Apply to the corresponding mat. You will notice this forms a slight border.
Repeat this step for the messaging layer.
Next, fold the outer card layer and burnish.
Add adhesive to the backside of the completed messaging panel.
Then place it on the back of the outer card.
Repeat this step for the completed front panel on the front of the card.
Add the embellishments to the gray keychain cutout and set aside.
Apply glue to one side of the pop up layer. This will include the backside of the sky cover panel.
Place inside the outer card making sure to leave a slight gap along the center fold and press into place.
Repeat for the other side and close the front of the card to ensure it adheres properly.
Now, take the belly band and slide it behind the card. Then wrap the side around the front.
Add glue to the edges and press into place.
Follow that up by adding the completed keychain over the seam on the belly band.
Then, add your text layers above and below the belly band.
STEP 7 - ASSEMBLE THE ENVELOPE
Begin by folding and burnishing all score lines.
Place glue on the underside of the top flap.
Add the colored inlay panel to the top flap.
Add glue to the bottom edge of the side flaps.
Next, bring the bottom flap up and press to form the envelope.
Now, this card once completed is a little bulky. So, you can always add the card to the envelope before adhering the bottom flap. This will ensure you have enough room for the card.
That's it! Your card is ready for a message and to be sent to the new homeowners!
Isn't the card so cheery and bright? I just love it. I even made one just for our house to let everyone know to have a happy day.
I hope you get a chance to gift this card to someone moving in their new space.
