How to Make Handbag Gift Bags on a Cricut
LEARN HOW TO MAKE BEAUTIFUL HANDBAG GIFT BAGS ON A CRICUT CUTTING MACHINE
I have to admit- I am a Coach boy. I own several and love their styling. I wanted to use the brand as my inspiration behind this gift bag and I hope I did it justice.
The bag features a pull out section that you can write a message and even add a gift card inside.
In this tutorial, I’ll give you my step by step instructions and tell you what materials I think work best when making this project.
You can purchase the SVG file for this project in my shop.

Tools

- Cricut StandardGrip Cutting Mat (green)
- Cricut Scoring Wheel or Stylus
- Cricut Scraper
- Cricut Brayer
Instructions
STEP 1 - PURCHASE & DOWNLOAD THE SVG CUT FILE
You can purchase the ColorBlock Purse Gift Bag SVG Cut File in my shop here.
STEP 2 - UPLOAD THE SVG FILE TO CRICUT DESIGN SPACE
If you aren't familiar with uploading SVG files into Design Space, take a look at my quick and easy tutorial here. Using your smartphone? Click here for my step-by-step guide on uploading SVG files with the Cricut App.
STEP 3 - UNGROUP CARD LAYERS
The file will upload into Cricut Design Space grouped together. You will want to hit the UNGROUP button to separate the layers.
STEP 4 - CONVERT FOLD LINES TO SCORE LINES
Scroll down the list in the LAYERS panel and find one of the bag pieces. Click the fold line and change the fold lines to score lines by changing the OPERATION from BASIC CUT to SCORE.
Attach the score line and the bag piece by highlighting the GROUP the bag piece is under and selecting the ATTACH option in lower right hand corner.
Repeat this step for the second bag piece.
Then, the handles.
Followed by the front lid.
Then, the pull out piece.
Finally, the four rectangles.
Click the GREEN Make It Button.
STEP 5 - MAKE YOUR MATERIAL SELECTIONS AND PREPARE YOUR MATS
You will see the layers for this card in the mat preview.
Click the CONTINUE button.
For this tutorial, I am using Medium Cardstock as well as mirror cardstock. Select your materials accordingly.
Attach your cardstock to the Cricut StandardGrip Mat using the Cricut Brayer.
STEP 6 - LOADING YOUR MATS AND CUTTING YOUR MATERIALS
To load the mat into the machine, press the double arrows button. Do make sure that the mat is positioned under the mat guides.
You will know the machine is ready to cut your material when you see the flashing "C" button. Press that to start the cut.
Follow Design Space prompts to change out the scoring wheel and fine point cutting blade.
Once the cut is complete, make sure to peel the mat away from the cardstock rather than the cardstock from the mat. This will prevent any curling of your design.
Repeat Step 6 for until all layers have been cut.
STEP 7 - ASSEMBLE YOUR CARD
Now that everything is cut, we can start to assemble the card.
Begin by folding and burnishing the two bag pieces along the score lines as shown.
Apply glue to the tab on one of the bag pieces.
Attach the other bag piece to the tab.
Flip the bag over and repeat for the other side, folding the tab inward.
Flip the bag over and add glue to the side flaps.
Fold one of the larger flaps to adhere to the side flaps.
Add glue on top of that larger flap and fold the other flap down completing the bottom of the bag.
Now, mat and layer the messaging panel.
Fold the pull out piece like an accordian. Holding the piece horizontally, the score lines should be a valley fold then a mountain fold then a valley fold.
Fold the lid along the score line.
Attach the pull out piece to the lid piece.
Add the messaging panel to the inside of the pull out piece. Make sure to center it.
Mat and layer the decorative embellishment.
Attach it to the lid.
Adhere a velcro dot to the underside of the lid.
Fold the handles along the score lines and slip one end through a ring.
Add glue to the tab and fold the tab back onto the handle, securing it on the ring.
Repeat for both ends of each handle.
Fold the rectangle pieces along the score lines.
Feed them through the other end of the rings. Add glue and attach both ends together.
Repeat this for both ends of each handle.
Attach the handles to the bag beginning with the back handle.
Apply glue to the backs of one of the rectangle tabs.
Insert the handle into the bag and line up the top of the rectangle tabs with the top of the bag.
Repeat this step for the front handle, however, make sure to add glue to the front of the rectangle tabs, not the back.
While the glue is still wet, stand the bag up and adjust the handles if needed.
Your beautiful gift bag is now complete.
