Easy Fourth of July Card
HOW TO DRAW WITH YOUR CRICUT AND MAKE A FOURTH OF JULY CARD
The Fourth of July is approaching! With everyone still social distancing, plans for barbecues and family picnics are being canceled. Send your loved ones that you normally see an awesome Fourth of July Card!
I designed this card to utilize the draw function of my Cricut. This not only cuts down on assembly time, it is easier to make such small images and saves my big fingers from gluing intricate cuts!!
Normally, when you convert the line type from cut to draw in Design Space, you only are able to draw the outline. This creates a “bubble affect”. That DOES NOT happen with this file! I designed it so that the machine actually fills in the bubbles!!
In this tutorial, I’ll give you my step by step instructions and tell you what materials I think work best when making this project.

Instructions
STEP 1 - DOWNLOAD THE SVG CUT FILE
Download the SVG Cut file for the Happy Fourth Card (#12) from The File Library. Not a member? Get access by joining the club.
STEP 2 - UPLOAD THE SVG FILE TO CRICUT DESIGN SPACE
If you aren't familiar with uploading SVG files into Design Space, take a look at my quick and easy tutorial here. Using your smartphone? Click here for my step-by-step guide on uploading SVG files with the Cricut App.
STEP 3 - UNGROUP CARD LAYERS
The file will upload into Cricut Design Space grouped together. You will want to hit the UNGROUP button to separate the layers.
STEP 4 - CONVERT FOLD LINES TO SCORE LINES AND ATTACH TO ENVELOPE
Scroll down the list in the LAYERS panel and find the envelope. Click the fold line.
Note: The envelope in the file you will download will look slightly different than the one pictured. I made some changes to the envelope to fit better on the 12x12 page! 🙂
Change the fold lines to score lines by changing the LINE TYPE from CUT to SCORE.
Attach the score line and the card piece by highlighting the GROUP the envelope is under.
Select the ATTACH option in lower right hand corner.
STEP 5 - PREP OUTER CARD LAYER
Scroll down the list in the LAYERS panel and find the card piece. Click the fold line.
Change the fold line to a score line by changing the LINE TYPE from CUT to SCORE.
Select the words "Happy" and "th". This is the text for the outer card layer that we want our machine to draw out.
Change the cuts to draw by changing the LINE TYPE from CUT to DRAW.
Highlight the outer card group and select ATTACH.
STEP 6 - PREP THE NUMBER FOUR (4)
Scroll down the list in the LAYERS panel and find the number four (4). Click the horizontal lines.
Change these lines to score lines by changing the LINE TYPE from CUT to SCORE.
Select the group for the number four (4).
Select the ATTACH option in lower right hand corner.
STEP 7 - PREP THE INNER CARD LAYER
Scroll down the list in the LAYERS panel and find the card piece. Click the fold line.
Change the fold lines to score lines by changing the LINE TYPE from CUT to SCORE.
Select the text for the inner card. This would be the words "LET", "FREEDOM", "RING", and "HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY".
Change the cuts to draw by changing the LINE TYPE from CUT to DRAW.
Select the fireworks for the inner card. This can be done one at a time or, if you are more advanced, you can select all layers of the same color and change them at once.
Change the cuts to draw by changing the LINE TYPE from CUT to DRAW.
Design Space defaults the color to black. We want the color to be BLUE. To change this, click the box next to the line type selection bar.
Change the color to BLUE.
Repeat this process for each section of the fireworks.
Helpful Tip: If you are unsure which color the fireworks need to be, take a look at the color box next to the line type selection bar before you convert the CUT line to DRAW. This will tell you what color you will want to change the drawing to.
Once you have all the fireworks changed to DRAW lines in the appropriate color, select the GROUP.
Select the ATTACH option in lower right hand corner.
Click the GREEN Make It Button located at the top right corner.
STEP 8 - MAKE YOUR MATERIAL SELECTIONS AND PREPARE YOUR MATS
Select your cardstock from the Materials list. I used Medium Cardstock for this tutorial.
You should notice that Design Space tells you which pen to insert into CLAMP A. The software will prompt you when to change pens as well as go from the scoring wheel, or stylus, to the cutting blade.
STEP 9 - LOADING YOUR MATS AND CUTTING YOUR MATERIALS
Attach your cardstock to the Cricut StandardGrip Mat. The StandardGrip Mat is perfect for this project because there will be a lot of back and forth motion as the machine draws the fireworks. I have found that the LightGrip mat can sometimes release the paper while the machine moves more frequently.
To load the mat into the machine, press the double arrows button. Do make sure that the mat is positioned under the mat guides.
Hit the "C" button once it begins to flash and you are on your way to cutting out your card!
Once the cut is complete, the double arrows will flash again. Press it and the mat will unload.
When removing the card, peel your mat away from the card rather than peeling your card away from the mat. This will help prevent curling.
Repeat Step 9 until all layers are drawn and cut.
The inner layer of the card will take some time to draw the fireworks.
STEP 10 - ASSEMBLE YOUR CARD
Start by assembling the number four (4). Glue the blue part of the flag to the white number.
Next, glue the red stripes to the number four (4). You can use the score lines as a guide to place the bottom of the stripes. This will ensure proper alignment and spacing.
Fold the inner card along the scored fold line.
Then fold the outer card along the scored fold line.
Apply glue to the inner card.
Attach the two layers together and press firmly.
Glue the number four (4) to the outer card. Line up the bottom of the number with the base of the card.
Apply foam squares or glue dots along the back of The Statue of Liberty.
Attach to the card. Make sure to line up the base of Lady Liberty with the white inner card. Press firmly to adhere.
STEP 11 - PERSONALIZE THE CARD
You're all done! You can personalize it if you wish or leave the card the way it is!
This card is sure to put anyone in a patriotic mood!

Hi Nick,
Thank you for sharing your July 4th card. As a beginner it was a bit challenging but I appreciate the free svg. Is there a reason you had all the steps such as changing cut lines to draw or score lines versus having that already part of the file? Thanks & keep creating!
Hi Maureen! Thank you for your comment.
I am sorry you found my tutorial a bit challenging! I try to make everything I post as thorough as possible. As to your question, the reason the score and draw lines are not included in the svg file is that I do not design my artwork in Cricut Design Space. It is done in another program. When you upload into Design Space, the software will change everything to a cut line or image. You then have to manipulate it from there. Also, some other programs do not have the capability to score or draw so it is better to leave everything as a cut and the end user can then follow the instructions to alter the file as intended.
I hope that answers your question! Congratulations on starting your papercrafting and Cricut journey!
Let me know if you have any other questions! I am happy to help!
Hi Nick, Love this card, but I don’t have the correct pens and I want to make it smaller – which I did – now I want to make it a print then cut – cricut Design space won’t let me flatten it any other suggestions? Thanks so much
Hi Flo!
I’m so glad you love the card as much as I do!
I made a quick video explaining how to make this a print then cut card. It is on my Facebook page. You can find it here, https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=278396170072838 .
I’m excited to see how it turns out for you!
Thanks for your comment! Happy Crafting!
