Easy Coffin Shaped Treat Boxes

LEARN HOW TO MAKE FUN AND EASY COFFIN SHAPED TREAT BOXES FOR YOUR NEXT HALLOWEEN PARTY OR TRICK-OR-TREATERS

I originally designed these Coffin Treat Boxes for my daughter's kindergarten class' Halloween Party. However, due to the pandemic, there is not going to be any party.

Since I had already designed this project, I knew if I shared these with you they wouldn't go to waste. And, as it would seem is our motto for 2020, we can always do it next year!

As for my family, I will be filling these with candy for our nieces, nephews, and any actual trick-or-treaters we may have this year!

In this tutorial, I’ll give you my step by step instructions and tell you what materials I think work best when making this project.

STEP 2 - UPLOAD THE SVG FILE TO CRICUT DESIGN SPACE

If you aren't familiar with uploading SVG files into Design Space, take a look at my quick and easy tutorial here. If you are on your smartphone, here is my tutorial on using the Cricut App.

STEP 3 - UNGROUP THE IMAGE

This step is not necesarry but I think it is always good to just get in the habit to ungroup after uploading into Design Space.

To ungroup your design, click UNGROUP from the layers panel.

STEP 4 - PREPARE YOUR MATS AND MAKE MATERIAL SELECTION

I am using Cricut Medium Cardstock for this project.

select medium cardstock

STEP 5 - LOADING YOUR MATS AND CUTTING THE IMAGE

Once you have placed your cardstock onto your mat, load the cutting mat into the machine by pressing the flashing ARROW button.

load your mat by pressing the arrows on your machine

You will know the machine is ready to cut your material when you see the flashing "C" button. Press that to start the cut.

begin the cut by pressing the flashing C button

Once the cut is complete, make sure to peel the mat away from the cardstock rather than the cardstock from the mat. This will prevent any curling of your design.

Repeat Step 5 for until both cuts are made.

STEP 6 - ASSEMBLE YOUR TREAT BOX

Now that your two layers have been cut, you can begin assembly. I have placed a scrap piece of cardstock over my mat to protect it from any glue that may transfer.

now its time to assemble your coffin treat boxes

Fold the coffin base along the score lines.

begin by folding along the score lines

Press each fold with your scraper to ensure a nice crisp line.

Take note at the tabs and walls of the coffin.

apply your glue or adhesive to the wall of the coffin next to the tab

Apply glue or adhesive to the walls of the coffin where any tab will come into contact with it.

continue to add adhesive to the walls of the coffin

Once you've added the adhesive, begin to fold the walls up to form the coffin box.

fold the coffin together securing the walls in place by pressing the tabs to the walls

After you have all the walls standing upright, apply adhesive to the inside flap of the walls.

Fold down to complete your box base.

Continue Step 6 for the treat box lid.

Now your treat boxes are ready to fill with all kinds of goodies!

I know that anyone you give these treat boxes to will not believe that you made them! So fun!

  1. I just uploaded the coffin boxes, but I am not showing score lines (?) Thanks – but I am a “newbie” and thus looking for easy projects, so maybe I missed something – Cheers, from Atlanta, GA Lisa Kaht

    1. Hi, Lisa!

I do apologize for this inconvenience. Due to a recent update in Design Space, preset score lines are not importing into projects.

Please ungroup the project, then you will see two groups representing the lid and box.

Within each group, there are two layers. The top layer in each are the score lines. Highlight the layer and change it from a basic cut to score under the operation menu.

Then, highlight the group and select attach in the layers panel.

I do apologize for these extra steps. I, and other designer friends, are trying to find a workaround for this.

If you need further help, please reach out to me!!

      Nick
