DIY Christmas Heart Cards

USE THE DRAW FUNCTION ON YOUR CUTTING MACHINE TO CREATE SIMPLE YET BEAUTIFUL CHRISTMAS HEART CARDS

I love making cards. It is one of my favorite things to do with my Cricut. I also love Christmas. So, I have been creating fun and unique cards to share with your all. This Christmas Heart Card is no different.

Not only is this card beautiful, it is also so simple to create. How? By using the DRAW function on your Cricut or other cutting machine. Of course, your machine will need this function to be compatible.

In this tutorial, I’ll give you my step by step instructions and tell you what materials I think work best when making this project.

Instructions

STEP 1 - DOWNLOAD THE SVG CUT FILE

Download the SVG Cut file for the Christmas Heart Card (#50) from The File Vault. Get access by joining the club.

STEP 2 - UPLOAD THE SVG FILE TO CRICUT DESIGN SPACE

If you aren't familiar with uploading SVG files into Design Space, take a look at my quick and easy tutorial here. Using your smartphone? Click here for my step-by-step guide on uploading SVG files with the Cricut App.

STEP 3 - UNGROUP CARD LAYERS

The file will upload into Cricut Design Space grouped together. You will want to hit the UNGROUP button to separate the layers.

ungroup the card layers

STEP 4 - CONVERT CUT LINES TO DRAW LINES

We want to have our machine draw the layers instead of cut them out. Design Space brings these layers into the canvas as cut layers which is why you see the card look a little different.

To change that, scroll down the list in the LAYERS panel and highlight one of the heart layers.

select one of the heart layers

Change the artwork to draw by changing the LINE TYPE from CUT to DRAW.

change the linetype to draw

Next, change the color of this layer to RED.

This is a totally optional step. If you would like the card to be drawn with one color, no problem! I like the look of two colors but it is totally up to you!

change the pen color to red

Highlight the remaining heart layer.

select the other heart layer

Next, change the artwork to draw by changing the LINE TYPE from CUT to DRAW.

STEP 5 - CONVERT FOLD LINE TO A SCORE LINE

Select the fold line in the LAYERS panel.

Attach everything by highlighting the GROUP.

STEP 6 - MAKE YOUR MATERIAL SELECTIONS AND PREPARE YOUR MATS

For this tutorial, I am using Medium Cardstock.

Attach your cardstock to the Cricut StandardGrip Mat.

STEP 7 - LOADING YOUR MATS AND CUTTING YOUR MATERIALS

To load the mat into the machine, press the double arrows button. Do make sure that the mat is positioned under the mat guides.

press the flashing arrows to load your mat

Hit the "C" button once it begins to flash and you are on your way to creating your card! Follow the prompts in Design Sapce on when to change out the pen or blades.

press the flashing "C" button to begin your cut

STEP 8 - FOLD AND PERSONALIZE YOUR CARD

Now that your machine has finished your card, we only have a few more steps left!

now your card is ready to fold and personalize

Gently fold the card along the score line.

Press the fold with your scraper.

Add your sentiment to the inside of the card.

You can make an envelope using the template included in your download.

Insert your card into the envelope and you can mail this out to your family and friends.

once you have personalized the card, you can add your card to your envelope and mail it to family and friends

Now, I just know anyone who receives this card will love it. It is very pretty and a lot of fun to make!

      1. Sorry to bother you but I’m trying to make your card and for some it’s drawing the images super thick and when I put the red pen in , the alignment is completely off. Any idea of why it’s doing this ?

  1. Love this card so much. The draw function on my maker is one of my favorites! Your card will be made over and over this holiday season. I did try loading the card twice, but both did no include the envelope. So I may need a little advice on that. Thanks so much for a great Christmas card.

    1. Julie,

      Ungroup the design.

Select the draw lines (one is black, one is red). Change the LINETYPE to pen under the operation menu. Do this for both draw layers.

Then, change the score line to score under the operation menu.

Highlight that group and select attach in the layers panel.

Click make it and you should be good to go to follow the Design Space prompts.
