Construction Pop-up Cards
LEARN HOW TO MAKE ADORABLE POP-UP CONSTRUCTION CARDS THAT ARE CUSTOMIZABLE!
My cousin recently turned six. He had a big birthday party but we were unable to attend. I wanted to send him something in the mail to let him know just how special he is! So, I immediately thought of how to make a construction card!
I wanted something super cool and super awesome! My son LOVES excavators and I knew Josh (my cousin) did too! So, I created this pop-up card that has an excavator digging in the dirt!
In this tutorial, I’ll give you my step by step instructions and tell you what materials I think work best when making this project.
I will be using vinyl to attach the text to the card but it is totally optional. If you want to glue cardstock, you certainly can!
Basic and Premium TBH Crafters Club Members can download the SVG cut file for this project in the File Library.

You can customize the file for the age of your birthday boy or girl, too!
UPDATE 7/18/20: I have added PDF versions of this card in the download. So, if you don't have a cutting machine, you can print out the layers and assemble the card!!

Attach the score line and the card piece by highlighting the GROUP the inner card layer is under.
Select the ATTACH option in lower right hand corner.
STEP 7 - CUSTOMIZE THE RECIPIENT'S AGE
I created the file to be able to be customized based on the recipient's age. Select the number that is appropriate and place accordingly. For this tutorial, I am using the number six (6).

Select the ATTACH option in lower right hand corner.
STEP 10 - PREP THE REMAINING TEXT
Highlight the lower portion of text of the inner card. Note: This step is necessary if you choose to use vinyl for the text on your card. Should you want to use cardstock, you do not have to do this next step!
Select the ATTACH option in lower right hand corner.
Click the GREEN Make It Button located at the top right corner.
STEP 11 - MAKE YOUR MATERIAL SELECTIONS AND PREPARE YOUR MATS
I am using a combination of Cricut brand Medium Cardstock and Oracal 631 Vinyl for my project. The reason I chose vinyl is that I find it easier to use for smaller applications then gluing all the pieces of cardstock. That being said, you do what you feel best fits for you!
STEP 12 - LOADING YOUR MATS AND CUTTING YOUR MATERIALS
Attach your cardstock to the Cricut StandardGrip Mat.
To load the mat into the machine, press the double arrows button. Do make sure that the mat is positioned under the mat guides.
Hit the "C" button once it begins to flash and you are on your way to cutting out your card!
Once the cut is complete, the double arrows will flash again. Press it and the mat will unload.
When removing the card, peel your mat away from the card rather than peeling your card away from the mat. This will help prevent curling.
Repeat Step 12 until all layers are cut.
STEP 13 - ASSEMBLE YOUR CARD
Start by assembling the stop sign. I think it is best to glue to outer border first then the inside.
Next, assemble the excavator.
Start by gluing the larger yellow pieces to the black backing.
Now, glue on the windshield.
Finally, glue the brighter yellow pieces over the darker yellow as well as the gray connector that holds the crane to the black backing. Make sure to line up the edges where need be.
Fold the outer card layer.
If using cardstock, attach to the outer card layer. If using vinyl, attach a piece of transfer tape to the outer card layer text.
Once you give the transfer tape a rub, peel the backing sheet away from the transfer tape.
Attach to the outer card layer and press using your scraper.
Add the stop sign next to the text.
Fold the inner card layer in half.
Now, pop up the tab slightly and press the fold lines creating the pop-up.
Next, fold the dirt layer along the score line.
Add glue to the layer and attach to the inner card layer.
Make sure to clear the pop-up tab before gluing the upper portion.
Press to ensure adhesion.
If using cardstock for the text, add to the inner card layer. If using vinyl, apply transfer tape to the text and adhere to your card.

Add your clouds. Isn't it so cute already??
Finish adding the remaining text to the lower portion of the card.
Apply glue to the "riser" portion of the pop up tab.
Attach the smaller piece of dirt.
Apply glue over the smaller piece of dirt. This is where the excavator will be.
Attach the excavator to the dirt pile.
Press to ensure the card folds properly.
Glue the inner card, one section at a time.
Attach the inner card layer to inside of the outer card.
Repeat for the other side.
Press with your scraper to ensure everything is adhered and folds properly.
You're all done!
I just know that anyone who receives this card is going to love it!
